1942 Itwamba County, Mississippi, Virginia Wynette Pugh was born, her father died shortly after her birth, her mother had to seek work to look after her family and Tammy was left with her grandparents to be raised. During her early childhood Tammy chopped Cotton. 

Married when she was 17 she attended beauticians School in Tupelo, Mississippi and later in Birmingham, Alabama. Divorced and with three children she somehow managed to be an housekeeper, mother, hairdresser and a country singer on the early morning TV Show The country boy eddie show.  She attracted lots of attention and appeared with Porter Wagoner.

A determined woman she moved to Nashville, rejected by several companies Billy Sherrill of Epic Records took her under his wing, changed her name to Tammy Wynette and in 1966 she recorded Apartment No 9 an immediate hit. 

She then had a string of hits with Divorce, You're good girls gonna go bad, I don't wanna play house, Stand by your man. Kids say the darndest things, she recorded duets with David Houston My Elusive Dreams and later her husband to be George Jones, together they sang Take Me, Golden Ring, Southern California, they were divorced in 1975 and Tammy later married producer George Richey. her autobiography was made into a TV movie.
