His first job was with the Fields Brothers Marvelous Medicine Show, he then moved onto a more settled job as a telegrapher on Sapulpa, Oklahoma. It was while doing this job in 1925 that a passing stranger heard him sing and told him to turn pro, the stranger was Will Rogers.

Gene heard Jimmie Rodgers singing in 1927 and was so impressed by Rodgers style that he included several aspects of Rodgers style in his own act. Shortly after this Gene was discovered by Uncle Art Satherly, Satherly was famous for uncovering such great talents as Bob Wills and Roy Acuff.

Billing Gene as Oklahoma's singing cowboy. Recording his own song That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine, Gene had his first hit which went on to sell 5 million copies.

Old Sante Fe

Gene soon became a regular on radio barn dance shows including Chicago's WLS. 1934 saw Gene singing in the Ken Maynard Western film In Old Sante Fe, getting good reviews he was immediately signed for the science fiction serial, The Phantom Empire. Despite the daft plots once again Gene stole the show and Republic Pictures signed Gene to his first full singing Western, Tumbling TumbleWeeds. This was the start of a career which was to span over 30 years and over 100 movies.

Between 1939 and 1956 he hosted his own radio show Melody Ranch, he also produced his own television program. Gene was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1969.
