Born in San Benito, Texas in 1937, his real name is Baldemar Huerta.

Born in San Benito, Texas in 1937, his real name is Baldemar Huerta.  While still young he travelled much of the US with his family who were migratory workers. He picked cotton in Arkansas, beets in Michigan, Hay and Tomatoes in Indiana.

As soon as he was old enough he joined the Marines but spent most of his career in the brig.  On his release he became a musician and he had a few Tex-Mex hits in his local area, these were in Spanish and at the same time he was dabbling in Rockabilly.

Wasted Days and Wasted Nights

3 years for possession of Marijuana

He had a regional hit with one of his own compositions Wasted Days and Wasted Nights, Just as it seemed his career was taking off he was arrested for possession of marijuana and spent the next three years in prison.

On release from prison Freddy could only get small time gigs and eventually he returned to his home town of San Benito where he became a mechanic, he recieved his high school diploma and enrolled in college.

In 1974 Freddy contacted Huey Meaux the record producer and recorded another of his songs Before the Next Teardrop Falls, the record became a national sensation, he followed this with a remake of Wasted Days and Wasted Nights, then Doris Day had a huge hit with one of Freddy's songs Secret Love. Sadly Freddy Fender died in October 2006
