Asleep At The Wheel

asleep at the wheel

Western Swing's revival started in the 1970's and one group stood head and shoulders above the rest. Asleep At The Wheel. Started in Philadelphia by Ray Benson and Reuben Gosfield, they were later joined by LeRoy Preston and Danny Levin

This grouping has been joined by many top artist over the years who have come and gone from the group's ensemble.

Initially based in Washington DC they moved to San Franscisco where they began their love affair with Western Swing. However it was in Texas they had their first hit single with 'The Letter Johnny Walker Read' after this they added Texas Fiddle, Reeds and Horns and they soon sounded like Old Western Swing Bands, they very quickly scored another hit with 'Route 66' since these early hits they have had one success after another moving beyond Western Swing to cover other aspects of country music.
